PRESS RELEASE

Tony O'Malley Travel Award for Painters

Presented in the Parade Tower of Kilkenny Castle on the 14th of June 2002

The Butler Gallery Awards programme, at The Castle, Kilkenny, Ireland.

Waterford Crystal kindly sponsors this award. It was set up to honour Tony O'Malley, a painter for whom travel has been a prominent factor; having travelled, lived and worked abroad for many years. The award is open to Painters only. 2,600 is granted to a successful applicant resident in Ireland, North or South, who has a specific travel proposal. The winner of the Tony O Malley Award 2002 was revealed in the Parade Tower of Kilkenny Castle on the 14th of June 2002. Michael Flynn, Head of Corporate Affairs, Waterford Crystal, spoke at the event and announced the winner of the award: Alan Keane a young painter from Co Meath, who has a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Ulster in Belfast.

In his winning submission Alan proposes to journey from the Baltics through to the Balkans, "by moving through landmasses, rivers, peoples, languages and architecture I will experience the various traits and uniqueness of the region." It is Alan's intention to document through photography, painting, drawing, and a written diary, the regions inherent nature, which in due course this will inform his art practice. In his speech, Michael Flynn, also stressed the importance of business and arts relationships. Nathalie Weadick Director of the Butler Gallery thanked the sponsor and stated the award as an example of local industry meeting local arts to promote the cultural development of their environment. Jean O Malley attended the proceedings on behalf of Tony O Malley and presented the cheque for 2,600 euro to Alan Keane. Much of Tony O Malleys work has been informed by travel and Tony, as an acclaimed Irish artist, is proud to be associated with this important award. Alan Keane's work and travel proposal was on show at the Butler Gallery on the 14, 15 and 16 June.
